Using Facebook and Linkedin for Job Search

If one goes by the media reports last week, Facebook has 700 Million users worldwide and growing at an exponential rate. Because of Media coverage Facebook gets, more & more people are tempted to at least try it out & User base will be touching one billion soon.

Apart from Traditional sourcing methods like Job Portals, Newspaper adverts etc., Recruiters and Employers have started using Business Networking site Linkedin and Social Networking site Facebook for alternate sourcing channels.

As a job seeker Linkedin offers more structured way of creating a Professional Profile, but free basic account has lot of limitations while communicating with prospective Recruiter or Employer. Facebook offers structured way of creating Personal Profile, but not Professional Profile. But it offers ease of communication. You can send messages to practically any one on facebook. And the best thing is that facebook is free and always will be.

Following things can be done by Job seekers:

1. Add Your Linkedin Profile link in Facebook Profile and Vice Versa.

2. Add a Designation to your facebook name or some where in your facebook profile, example "Amit Arora - Piping Design Engineer" OR "Tilak Wadher - Business Analyst" etc. When Recruiters and Employers search for these Designations, your profile will show up in search results.

3. There are Fanpages of many Recruitment Companies and Employers. Many of them post current job openings with them on regular basis. Example - Our official Facebook Fanpage http://www.facebook.com/pages/Aarvi-Encon/108444489216064. Once you click the "Like" Button on top of fanpage, you will receive notification of all job postings on your wall.

4. Many Recruiters and Employer have created Facebook Groups either Industry specific such as Oil & Gas / banking or Function specific such as Design Engineer / Sales & Marketing etc. You can search & join these group as you like. Any new postings in these groups should show up on your wall.

5. Invite your friends and colleagues to join those group & to like those fanpages. Who knows, you might land up job together in the same company.

6. Normally if there is a Group or Fanpage by Recruiter or Employer, it will have details like Company profile, Website link etc. If these details are missing, please exercise discretion before forwarding your CV.

If you like this article, please share it on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and everywhere to help linking Job Seekers with prospective Employers and Recruiters.

Any suggestions and ideas to add to this article are always welcome.

Good Luck Job Hunting.
